The MiniMoto SA open day was held on the 6th February 2010 at the Kyalami Kart Circuit. What a day! It was amazing to see the number of newcomers interested in joining this exciting sport of ours. The weather played along perfectly which was a welcome relief to most of us living in Gauteng as we’ve been experiencing the highest summer rain fall in over 20 years.
We also had some celebs spotted in the paddock. South Africa’s very own superbike champion Sheridan Morias as well as the editor of Motorcycling SA and SBK racer Robert Portman came out for the morning. They were there to do a couple of laps on an open class bike and get a feeling of what it was like to ride a pocket bike with the track slipping past just inches from your helmet.
Class sessions were called off as riders were more interested in getting some laps under their belts than sitting inside a clubhouse. The dyno was a hive of activity with teams eager to get an idea of what their off season efforts have produced.
Unfortunately the consistent rain, coupled with a blocked storm water drain, resulted in a constant trickle of water flowing across turns 2 and 4, putting an end to breaking any laps records.
It was a great day for everyone and a perfect start to the 2010 season.
